The UK is where the work started. Wet pavements reflecting pub signs. Market stallholders who've been doing this their whole lives. Coastal towns on a weekday when the tourists have gone home. Every frame in this collection was shot with one camera, one lens — no zoom to reach for, no backup to fall back on. Just the scene, and a decision.

Porthleven, no particular plan. I was shooting on a film camera older than me — just. One camera, one lens, zone focus. Click.
A little while later, I thought the film had jammed. So I opened the back.
You're not supposed to do that. Light gets in. The frame is ruined. Except this one wasn't ruined — it was made. The light leak gave the harbour something the original frame didn't have. Something quieter and stranger. Eerie is the right word.
A happy accident. The best kind of photograph is the one you didn't entirely plan.

I stood at Porthleven harbour for about an hour with a film camera, waiting for the gull and the Institute clock tower to line up. Not guessing, not spraying frames. Just watching and waiting for the moment when the bird, the tower, the harbour wall, and the light would be exactly where they needed to be.
That's the other side of the one-camera, one-lens discipline. Sometimes the constraint isn't moving your feet, it's staying completely still. Committing to a frame and waiting for the world to walk into it.
When the gull came over, I pressed the shutter once. That's the print.

Porthleven is my favourite coastal village. I was having a wander, no particular plan, just looking.
An older couple had set themselves up against the stone wall — folding chairs, hats against the midday sun, shoes off, a flask, a woven beach bag. Everything they needed for a slow afternoon. They weren't doing anything. That was exactly the point.
If you look carefully, there's a figure in the background. I saw it, I took it.
That's Porthleven. It doesn't perform. It just gets on with the business of being itself, and if you're paying attention with a camera already in your hand, it lets you in.

Winter afternoon at Marazion, and the light was doing exactly what winter light does on the Cornish coast. Arriving late, sitting low, making everything it touches feel considered.
Two of my favourite females were ahead of me on the shoreline. My partner and our dog. They didn't know I was watching. Their shadows stretched long across the wet sand. St Michael's Mount sat behind them in the distance, exactly where it's always been. The sea was doing what it always does.
One camera. One lens. The light and shadow were working together in a way I didn't want to miss. I took one frame.
Anyone looking at this sees a silhouette on the Cornish coast. I see two of the people I love most on a quiet winter afternoon, completely unaware that I'm watching. That's what I mean when I say a photograph is never just a photograph.

Three visits. One lens. One frame.
I'd been walking the same harbour wall on three visits to Porthleven, a small fishing village on the Cornish coast, the kind of place that still feels like it belongs to the people who live there. Every visit, I walked the same stretch, watched the same light move across the same water, and came home without the photograph I was after.
On the first visit I shot everything. Forty frames. None of them was it. They were all accurate. None of them was true.
The second visit I made myself slow down. I had one lens and nowhere to hide.
By the third morning I'd stopped planning. I walked to the harbour wall, sat down, and waited.
I saw him. He'd been spearfishing. I didn't speak to him. He never looked at me. The light was coming from across the harbour. I made one frame.
He made a quick call, jumped down off the wall, put the fish he'd caught in his car, and drove off. I never saw him again.
That's all I have. One moment from three mornings. Whoever he is, whatever he was thinking about out there on the harbour wall, that's between him and the harbour. The photograph just caught the edge of it.

"Forty frames on the first visit. None of them was it. By the third morning, I'd stopped planning." — Billy
Coronation Park in Helston, in autumn. A child was blowing soap bubbles near the lake. I framed deliberately, the bubble, not the child.
This one floated out over the water and caught the light at exactly the right angle. Pink, green, violet, colours that had no business existing on a grey autumn afternoon in Cornwall. The warm tones of the trees, the cool reflections in the lake, and this small sphere of air and soap that lasted about three more seconds after I pressed the shutter. Camera already up, zone focus already set, blam.
Street photography doesn't have to be a street. It just has to be a moment that wouldn't wait.
